Issues with network drives

Even if the concept of small Network Attatched Storages is very cool, I have some reservations against it, at least for my own personal use.

First of all, they seldom seem to get the communication protocols quite right. At least not the solutions I can afford. I have tried a few products through the years, and I have always experienced data loss at some point due to bugs in the NAS software. As far as I concern, the only good way to put a disk on a network is through a real server that runs a real OS.

Secondly, unless you run of a 1Gbit wired network, the speed penalty is too high. You will notice it on large files, but if you copy many files, even if they are small, it becomes unbearable.

So if I decide to buy the WD My Book I was talking about in my last post, it will be connected directly to my stationary Mac. In addition to that, I will connect small usb disk to my Wireless router for less critical files that I whish to access from my lap top as well.
